পাঠশালা - Bengali School Irvine

Over the years, our school strength has fluctuated between 30-45. Currently we have about 30 students divided among three classes, and serving the age group of 5-15. The school is run by a group of parent volunteers. There is a nominal monthly fee to cover the rental expenses of the school facility. The monthly fee is $25 for one child, $20 for each sibling

General Curriculum and Activities include:

  • Promote speaking, reading and writing in Bengali
  • Promote Bengali cultural awareness through performing arts
  • Show case student talent through cultural activities
  • Encourage and facilitate students to participate in cultural activities either at BASC or other platforms
  • Annual Saraswati Puja
  • One annual drama production for BASC

It started with a few phone calls, a couple of meetings to gauge community interest and a close friend donating their office space for Pathsala use; and Pathsala, the Bangla School in Irvine was formed in November 2000. Pathshala was conceived with the usual vision of few first generation parents. The main goal being that the children should not lose touch with the language and culture of the land that shaped their parents. As parents, we wanted them to be able to understand and speak the language, and perhaps, be able to read a bit too. We hoped that the children could converse with their grandparents and relatives back in India. Today, the school is more than just an institution it is a community.

Classes meet at the Ektaa Center in Irvine (2691 Richter Ave. Ste 104/10, Irvine CA 92606) every Sunday between 10:30 - noon. School year is between mid August and mid June of the following year with closures aligning more or less with public school closures.
